National Pilot Project
After years in development and extensive external evaluation, it was time to pilot the Generation Schools model. In 2004 the founder, Furman Brown, earned a prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship for social innovation. His was one of nine projects selected from hundreds of proposals worldwide. In 2005 the Generation Schools organization was founded to partner with community leaders, local school districts and universities to create and support public schools based on the model. Together with Terri Grey and a school planning team, we earned approval from the New York City Department of Education to open the first school using the model; the school opened to 80 9th-graders in September 2007.
We remain committed to the success of the staff, students and families at Brooklyn Generation School. At the same time, we continue to meet with education and community leaders throughout the country who offer valuable feedback, support and encouragement.
